2010

take a trip on a rocketship baby...

2010 come out of the blue and switched things up for me in a few different ways. It was an off year, no album to promote and no real reason for a tour yet a tour happened. Tori played a set of festival dates in the summer and ended the year in style by playing what at the time was going to be her only show backed by a full orchestra. It was also the year that I left Belfast behind for a life in London.

The first date I decided on was a no brainer, Tori in Dublin. Weirdly it was the first time I decided to make the quick trip to Dublin from Belfast to see her. The show was in Iveagh Gardens, an outdoor show that looking back is one of the most memorable Tori shows that I've ever seen.  I'd been keeping an eye on her setlists throughout the tour to try and get a feel for what she'd been playing but it didn't prepare me for the weird mixed bag of awesomeness that was the setlist for Dublin and moreso it didn't prepare me for the electric atmosphere of seeing her completely captivate a crowd as the wind gusted around us all. There is a video on Youtube of Tori opening the show with Bouncing Off Clouds, you can see the stage curtains fluttering in the wind and you can hear Tori crystal clear but even this doesn't manage to capture the feeling of the show.

What I thought would be my only other show that year (spoiler alert, it wasn't) was another trip across to London. Oddly enough when I flew over for the show I didn't know that I would make the move over to London to live later on this same year. The London show continued the 'weird setlist' theme of 2010 but this was a lot darker than Dublin. Something was in the air that night, Tori brought a ferocity and almost anger to her performance that was in stark contrast to the playfulness from Dublin. This show marks the one and only time that I've seen Tori perform Me & A Gun, an earth shattering, boundary breaking song which even when performed in 2010 was as painful and raw as it ever was.

I knew pretty early on that Tori would be playing a one off show later in the year with an orchestra but I honestly didn't expect that I'd be going to it. In the months following the London show my life changed quite dramatically and I was preparing to make the move from Belfast to London. Moving your life a couple of hundred miles doesn't seem like a big deal but it is. Somewhere in the midst of this I thought a trip to Amsterdam only a few weeks before the move would be a good idea.

The Orchestra show ended up being great, but didn't live up to the high expectations that I had for a show that I thought was going to be a one off. Tori performed well but it was clear that performing with the orchestra was at the time a little outside of her comfort zone. Even if it wasn't my favourite show I'd ever seen it included some nice performances (with ORCHESTRA!!!) and gave me my first performance of Flying Dutchman which was a song that jumped out to me immediately when I was first diving into Tori's substantial b-side catalogue years earlier so I'll forever cherish it for that.
